Jimmy Eat World Cancels Tour as Jim Adkins Recovers from Emergency Eye Surgery

Jimmy Eat World have cancelled some tour dates as frontman Jim Adkins recovers from emergency surgery.

The Arizona emo icons have been out on the road since June, celebrating the 25th anniversary of their 2001 breakthrough album ‘Bleed American’ – playing the record in full alongside cuts from 1999’s ‘Clarity’ and 2004’s ‘Futures’ and a host of B-sides.

Already they have kicked off the shows with a run of US headline dates including a stop at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and have since come across the pond for a massive gig at London’s Crystal Palace Bowl alongside Jay Som, The Get Up Kids, and Rise Against.

Over the past weekend, however, the band expectedly pulled out of their scheduled appearance at the Warped Tour in Mexico City, and now they have explained that the move was done as their frontman had a “detached retina” and needed emergency surgery.

“Sunday, as we were preparing to play at Warped Tour in Mexico City I noticed a shadow cloud creeping in on my vision. With some quick research, I knew I had to seek medical help immediately,” Adkins’ statement online read.

“After an exam, it was discovered that I had a detached retina and needed surgery asap. Per doctors orders, attempting to do the show could have caused permanent damage, so we had to make the tough decision to cancel our performance.”

He went on to say that he is now “back home, out of surgery and starting the recovery process”. While he is on the mend, however, the band will have to pull out of their scheduled slots at Louder Than Life in Louisville and Shaky Knees in Atlanta, each planned for this week.

“We are disappointed to be missing you,” Adkins concluded. “Take care of yourselves, listen to your body and we’ll be rocking with you all again soon!”

Speaking to NME about the enduring legacy of ‘Bleed American’ earlier this year, Adkins shared that he has seen the album go through “its ups and downs in a public way in the first five years”, and is still finding a new audience years on.

‘The Middle’ was very successful in a commercial way where you didn’t have to seek it out because it was on the radio. ‘Sweetness’ too,” he added. “The people that are finding the album now, or in the last 10 years, means its something they’ve sought out or have been able to absorb in a way that allows it to be theirs, on a personal level. Now you can really feel what it means to you as a listener. That’s powerful.”

The 2026 shows come following Jimmy Eat World sharing the ‘Something(s) Loud’ EP at the end of 2025 – a six-song release that paired digital-only singles – including ‘Something Loud’, ‘Place Your Debts’, and a cover of Crooked Fingers’ ‘Call to Love’ – with the previously unreleased track ‘Failure’.

Their last full-length album was 2019’s ‘ Surviving ‘. In a three-star review , NME shared: “This album explores some of the different kinds of weights my ego tells me I have to carry… They came up among a crop of bands intent on mining nostalgia and living relentlessly in the past, but the group’s bold, brave steps forward are welcome.”
