Jorge Drexler Defends Reggaetón, Praises Bad Bunny as a "Great Lyricist"

Latin Grammy-winning songwriter Jorge Drexler has long pushed back against dismissive attitudes toward reggaetón, and now the celebrated Uruguayan musician is making the case for paying closer attention to one particular part of the genre: its lyrics.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone en Español , Drexler singled out Bad Bunny as one of the contemporary writers he most admires while arguing that the music industry often fails to give lyrics the same attention it affords virtually every other part of making a record.

“Why do we like Bad Bunny’s songs? I particularly like them,” Drexler said, pointing to the dialogue between a nephew and his aunt in “Tití Me Preguntó” as an example of the Puerto Rican superstar’s writing.

“There are great lyricists, and Bad Bunny is one of them for me,” he added, also praising Calle 13 co-founder Residente as “extraordinary.”

Thanks to his songwriting, Bad Bunny has had a particularly historic year. In February, DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS became the first Spanish-language project to win Album of the Year at the Grammys. The album additionally took home Best Música Urbana Album.

Drexler, who himself received 8 Latin Grammy nominations last week, has never been shy about his appreciation for Bad Bunny and reggaetón in general. The Uruguayan has performed his own version of the Puerto Rican’s “Yo Perreo Sola” on several occasions, transforming the reggaetón hit into a traditional milonga.
