Severe Weather Disrupts Major US Festivals and Sporting Events

Inclement weather across large portions of the United States Midwest and Southeast impacted major festivals including Riot Festival in Chicago, Shaky Knees in Atlanta and Louder Than Life in Louisville, leading to delays, evacuations, early stoppages and set times adjusted. No major injuries or damage was reported, although numerous sets were canceled or adjusted due to the disruptions.

Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and lightning saw Riot Fest in Chicago cut its second day short and open at 2 p.m. on Sunday so crews could attend the muddy grounds. Headliners Tool and Morrissey played earlier than scheduled and were able to complete sets before early closure, while Nas, to the confusion of some, did not make the new early set time but did play a full set around 7:30-8:30 according to fan reports online.

Louder Than Life saw a Friday afternoon evacuation, leaving fans to wait out the weather until the storms passed. The site reopened after 5 p.m. with adjusted set times, including headliner My Chemical Romance moving slightly to 9:25 p.m. and Knocked Loose playing a late set at 11:05 p.m. Papa Roach’s set was canceled following a medical emergency involving bassist Tobin Esperance, while Limp Bizkit kept its headline slot. Sunday proceeded as originally planned.

Shaky Knees in Atlanta saw particularly violent weather including 60 mph wind gusts on Saturday, forcing organizers to temporarily pause performances and order an evacuation of the festival site at Piedmont Park. The site reopened after 9 p.m., with headliners Twenty One Pilots able to perform and reportedly adhered to the 11 p.m. curfew, although many fans had left and were unable or unwilling to return.

EDM camping festival Lost Lands, headlined by Excision, also saw foul weather in Thornville, Ohio, where attendees were told to clear the festival grounds and wait out the weather. After a brief disruption, fans were able to return and attend scheduled performances, according to local media.

An NFL game between the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers was delayed more than two hours due to lighting and storms in the vicinity of Raymond James Stadium, and the home team was unable to thwart the visiting Browns after the unusually long delay mid-game.
